Quincy Suzanne King

Quincy Suzanne King was born on Wednesday June 13, 2012. She weighed 6 lbs. 13 ozs. and was 20 ins. long. This is how it all went down. I was so done being pregnant. It was hot. I was uncomfortable. I was anxious to meet my baby girl and I just wanted to be done. I was ready. I was worried and stressing about getting my mom and dad here in time and the thought of spending 800 dollars on a last minute plane ticket, sent my stomach in a whirlwind. So I asked if it would be possible for them to drive up on Wednesday. (This was on Monday the 10). They said they would get packed up and head out here on Wednesday. Whew!!! Ok one stressful problem solved. Now to get this baby out of me. I called my friend Celinda and asked her if she would come over and rub my feet. She knows the spots to rub to induce labor. She came over on Tuesday and rubbed my feet and sent me into contractions. They were coming good for about five hours and then stopped when I went to bed. On Wednesday I woke up and felt the contractions coming again. They were irregular but they were coming. I have a friend, Christi Parker, who is a labor and delivery nurse at Davis Hospital and I knew that she was working that day. I texted her to see if I could come in and see where I was at and somehow get things going. She said to come on in and she would convince my doctor to keep me. Thanks Christi!! So I called Chad and told him of my plan. He was on board and said he'd be home in an hour. I called Katie and Kathy to see if they could help watch my other kiddos and they said they could both work it out and Katie was on her way. I then called Celinda and asked her if she would come over again to rub my feet and hopefully that would keep the contractions coming. This whole scheme was a huge team effort!! Celinda came over and rubbed my feet. After that, I was contracting every 5 minutes and I was ready to go. Chad got home and we got ready and headed to the hospital. Christi came in and checked me and said that I was at a three. I couldn't believe it.She said she would go talk to my doctor, who happened to already be in that afternoon. This was at 1:00. Christi came back and after a little scheming was able to convince my doctor that I was here and in labor. Time to admit me!! I was so excited. 4 out of my five deliveries were induced by me. I pick the date, make it happen, done deal! We got settled in, called family and friends to let them know what was happening and got comfortable in the hospital bed. Christi hooked me up to my IV and started pitocin. Dr. Sumsion came in and attempted to break my water. After five minutes of digging around, he was unable to positively say he had broke my water. Instead of fluid coming out in a gush, I had blood and blood clots and lots of them. Unaware of how serious this was, Chad and I watched as the doctor and Christi assessed the situation. They monitored the baby really close for about ten minutes at a time for the whole rest of the delivery because I was losing so much blood. Turns out I had an abruption and my placenta was coming away from the uterus and falling apart. Had I not gone in that early to have her, Quincy might not be here today. She was a champ though and never showed any signs of stress. Had she done that, they would've had to wheel me in for an emergency C-section. All of it hit home when they told me that. Christi checked me every hour and I would only dilate 1/2 a centimeter. I got to a six no problem and then slowly dilated after that. The baby wouldn't drop and engage her head to help dilate me. My mom and dad made it in time though and they got there around 4:30. Riley and Cami wanted to see her be born, so Katie and Kathy brought all the kiddos to the hospital around 4:30 as well. Finally at 8:30 I was at a ten. My first attempts at pushing were very poor. I had forgotten how to push. Finally on the second contraction I remembered and was able to push correctly and one push was all it took. Quincy came out with a bunch of blonde hair and fat cheeks. She was so cute. They got her cleaned up and passed her around to everyone and then it was time for everyone to go home. Chad took the kids and my parents home to our house for the night. I had told Chad to stay home because he had a cold. So it was going to be just Quincy and I that night. Not so. After I tried to nurse her I noticed she was making a lot of noises. Humming. The nursery nurse came in and said that she didn't like her color so she wanted to have her looked at. She came in 15 minutes later and said that she was admitted into the NICU!! My heart dropped and my stomach turned. I couldn't believe my baby was in the NICU. I got wheeled to my room and got situated. I felt so helpless. All I wanted to do was see Quincy, hold her. Have her in my room! I asked the nurse if I could go see her. She got a wheel chair and wheeled me to the NICU. I saw Quincy, hooked up to all of the wires and tubes. She had an IV in her head and bruises where they had tried to poke her before they got it in the head. She was asleep and hooked up to her oxygen. She had pinked up a ton and looked so much better. Dr. Eberhard, our pediatrician, came in and looked her over. He said that she needed some fluids through her IV and her oxygen was up and she was looking good but she'd probably have to be in there for a few days. I asked him what was the best case scenario? He said that she could get off of her oxygen in the morning and be out of the NICU by the afternoon. He was not optimistic that this would happen. I knew right then and there that we needed prayers for Quincy. I texted and called family members and told them what had happened and asked them to pray for Quincy. I prayed all night long and couldn't sleep. I knew that she'd be better in the morning. First sign of daylight, I got up and showered and headed to the NICU. She was still hooked up to the oxygen and the IV. Dr Eberhard came by and said that she looked so much better and that she could get off of the oxygen. He wanted to monitor her without the oxygen and pump her up with some more fluids and see how she was at lunch time. I knew our prayers had been answered. At lunch time she had been off her oxygen and was breathing and looking so good that he discharged her from the NICU. I was so relieved. After that short stay in the NICU, we stayed one more night at the hospital and came home on Friday afternoon. We were so excited to come home. The kids were so happy to have us home and I'm sure my mom and dad were relieved to have us home as well. Life with five kids has not been as big of an adjustment as I thought it would be. We love our little Quincy. She is so sweet and brings such a sweet spirit into our home. Thank you to all who helped with the kids and meals and holding down the fort while we were at the hospital. What a great family we have.
